Why You Should Spend Summer in the Milwaukee Region

The Milwaukee area is best known for exceptional breweries, a strong sports culture and endless outdoor fun. However, if the hustle and bustle of downtown isn’t for you, there are a number of suburbs in and around Milwaukee, including Mequon.

Here, you can recharge your batteries and enjoy small town experiences and events. There’s plenty to keep you entertained, even in the burbs! Have lunch at Cafe 1505, play golf at Mee-Kwon Park Golf Course or explore the beautiful Mequon Nature Preserve. And when you crave big city entertainment options, a suburb like Mequon is only a 20-30 minute drive to downtown Milwaukee.

Outdoor Summer Activities Near Milwaukee

With fantastic weather and longer days, summer is the perfect time to explore all of the area’s natural wonders. Here are three must-do outdoor summer activities in Milwaukee and surrounding areas.

Hike or Bike Nature Trails

Get inspired by nature with a hike or bike through one of the region’s nature trails. The state has built an extensive trail network, making it easier and safer for hikers and bikers to travel. A popular trail for older adults is the Geneva Lake Shore Path, which is a bit less rigorous, but no less beautiful. Don’t forget to keep hydrated, wear sunscreen and dress appropriately while you’re out in the sun.

Explore the Lynden Sculpture Garden

An exceptional exhibition of art in nature, the Lynden Sculpture Garden features more than 50 sculptures installed in the outdoor area of the former estate of Harry and Margaret (Peg ) Bradley. Unique pieces include the Hara, The Lovers and the Bremen Town Musicians. Art lovers flock to this almost hidden site to experience these sculptures in person.

Tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s Architectural Gems

Did you know that the iconic architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, was a Wisconsinite? Although Wright’s famous architectural designs can be seen in many states across America, Wisconsin was his home and is the location of more than 40 of his architectural pieces.

If you’re looking for a day trip, you can tour nine beautiful Wright buildings and homes when you drive along the famous Frank Lloyd Wright Trail. One of these iconic sites is his former home and studio, Taliesin, located just a few hours drive west of Milwaukee. Book an intimate tour of the location to get an in-depth look into how the design legend lived and worked.

You may gain new respect for nature after touring Wright’s homes. It’s no wonder the architect was so passionate about incorporating nature into his work. He grew up in one of the most beautiful areas of America.
