Carriage homes at Newcastle Place: a bridge for active boomers

Downsizing isn’t about giving something up. It’s about trading the hassles for freedom. That’s why Newcastle Place is introducing new carriage homes—designed for people who still want the independence of a house but without the worry of what comes with it.

Who’s the ideal resident? It could be a couple looking to shed the chores of lawn care and shoveling snow, but not the joy of having their own front door. It could be someone whose spouse still works but wants to simplify their life while it is active and full. Or it could be someone moving solo, ready to enjoy more peace of mind.

One of our residents, Connie Pukaite, captures the “why” perfectly:

“Why did I decide to sell and move from the home I loved and had lived in for more than 40 years when I was happy, healthy, very active in the community and had great neighbors who watched out for me after my husband died?

“It occurred to me one winter day when I was carrying 40 pounds of salt down the cellar stairs … that if I tripped and fell, it might be days before anyone found me. I was 75 years old.

“I thought when I’m 80—just five short years away—I probably shouldn’t be alone and physically responsible for a large home and 2.5 acres.”

That moment led Connie to Newcastle Place. For her, staying in Mequon meant staying rooted in her community while giving herself the gift of choice, independence and a neighborhood feel.

The new carriage homes, which broke ground this summer, offer that same assurance in a different package:
  • Your own space. A private residence with its own garage and entrance without the burden of long-term upkeep.
  • A neighborhood feel. Friends next door, pets welcome and a community full of activities when you want them.
  • Peace of mind. Just like Connie, carriage home residents will know they’re supported as their needs change.

“The carriage homes give residents the best of both worlds — the privacy of a home with the peace of mind that comes with being part of Newcastle,” director of sales Julie Irvine said. “It’s an ideal option for people who want independence today but also want the reassurance of having care and services available tomorrow.”

Irvine said those who’ve committed to carriage homes to date are in their mid-to-late 70s and a mix of singles and couples. The demographic mirrors many who live throughout Newcastle’s 172-home community.

The truth is, every Newcastle resident has their own story. Connie’s reason for moving may be different from yours. But her words capture what so many discover once they settle here.

“Newcastle offers me a neighborhood, peace of mind, and the assurance that I’ll be taken care of for as long as I live. And I don’t have to worry about maintaining a property. It’s a great life.”
