Newcastle Place Wellness: A Holistic Approach to Aging

Wellness is a moving target, but at Newcastle Place, the goal is to ensure every resident has the tools to hit it. From the physical benefits of a dedicated fitness center to the mental boost of a vibrant social scene, the community takes a holistic approach to healthy aging. It’s more than minutes spent on a treadmill or laps swum in the pool; it’s about how nutrition, movement, and connection work together to keep life full and active.

At Newcastle Place, wellness is about more than just hitting a physical milestone. It’s about the people you meet along the way. Whether it's through a shared laugh during chair volleyball or a morning walk on a local trail, programs are designed to build a support system that makes healthy living feel less like a chore and more like a community event.

The foundation of Newcastle’s fitness program is accessibility and individual progress. Group exercise classes are offered five days a week across all ability levels of living —from beginner seated options like Tai Chi, stretch-and-tone to advanced classes such as circuit training and floor yoga. The program is always evolving.

Something for Every Level

The monthly residents’ fee includes four complimentary personal training sessions and an annual fitness assessment to support specific goals.

"We support all levels of fitness ability,” Newcastle fitness supervisor Cassie Diaz said. “In addition to regularly scheduled classes, I focus on creating new and engaging opportunities that encourage residents to stay active and view wellness as more than just structured exercise.

“We also incorporate at least two special events each month and continuously develop new initiatives to keep our programming fresh, engaging and meaningful."

Finding a Fit — and Community

For residents like Nadean Stahl, the variety was an immediate draw when she moved to Newcastle in 2023.

“I started participating in Newcastle’s fitness programs shortly after I moved in," Stahl said. "Yoga and water aerobics are at the top of my list. The program is excellent with a wide range of choices geared to different fitness levels. The fitness center has a variety of workout machines, classes covering cardio, balance, body strength, Tai Chi, Neuromove and a pool. Weather permitting, we enjoy regular walk outings.”

Physical fitness isn’t all Stahl enjoys. Building her social muscle is just as important.

“Being a member of the chair volleyball team is fun, as are the social outings,” Stahl said. “My overall fitness, balance, strength have greatly improved, and I just feel better about myself. For me, it was a great way to get to know people.”

Joanne Corcoran found that the convenience of on-site classes made staying active an easy choice when she moved to Newcastle in fall 2020.

“I appreciated the convenience of the fitness classes and knew it was an excellent way to meet other residents (besides Happy Hour!), when I moved to Newcastle," Corcoran said. “Our instructors are very patient and understanding and we each practice at our own level. Anyone is welcome. Cassie plays lovely, gentle yoga music, and we always leave much more toned than when we entered."

Wellness Beyond the Studio

Wellness at Newcastle Place extends well beyond the fitness center. Nutrition plays a vital role supported by three distinct dining options: the Skylight Room, the Royal Oak Room and the Castle Cafe. They offer everything from daily rotating dinner menus to quick, healthy grab-and-go options.

The community also hosts educational workshops and guest speakers covering topics that range from nutrition to fall prevention, ensuring residents stay as informed as they are active. Whether it’s pickleball, a competitive round of chair volleyball or a peaceful hike through a local park, the focus remains on keeping the community moving together healthfully.

At Newcastle Place, wellness isn’t a solo pursuit. It’s built into every class, meal and connection made along the way. It’s built on variety and choice. It’s the freedom to push hard or simply show up.
